Winter Blues? Dance Them Away!

We know this time of year can be hard to keep kids busy in a healthy way, especially after the holidays are over. Even the holidays themselves can be stressful. If this sounds familiar, keep scrolling for this month’s fun fact and learn how dance can help.

There's a shift...

Do you notice a change in your little one during the winter? Maybe they’re a little down, less active. Maybe they’re restless and irritable. Maybe a little of both. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone and it’s actually quite common!

Bitter cold, holiday gatherings, lights, different routines, less sunlight, less time outdoors, and let’s not forget the cookies...!! All these things can overstimulate the senses, leading to pent-up energy and mood changes.

Enter...Dance!

The good news is, dancing can help turn things around! Here's a few ways how.

Dancing can help reset the nervous system by reducing stress hormones like cortisol and increasing happy hormones like serotonin, acting as a form of self-regulation. It also allows self-expression in a non-verbal and healthy way, which can help get rid of big emotions. And, as you know learning anything requires focus. Dance classes give kids a chance to practice focus, mindfulness, and being in the present moment. All these things help reduce sensory overload, create an internal sense of calm, and so much more. And let’s not forget kids just think it’s fun!!

The benefits can keep going at home too! Daily practice, even for just a few minutes, helps manage stress, teach self-regulation, and provide opportunities for indoor fun any time. You can even benefit from it too! Try a family dance night so you can see for yourself how great it feels to dance.
